It was truly the first global war involving all the major and most of the minor powers of the early nineteenth century, wracking Europe and parts of Africa, India and the North American continent, and the islands of the Mediterranean and the Caribbean in a war of a new style. First against the liberty fired armies of Revolutionary France and then against the expansionist empire of the foremost general of his age Napoleon Bonaparte.
France shattered the formal clockwork armies of Prussia and Austria in a new fluid style of war that emphasised movement in column over the ridged drillwork of the 18th century lines of battle that gave those armies a tactical straight jacket from which they could not escape. The elan and dash of the French Army gave it an advantage that place all of continental Europe under her heel for more than 10 years. The generalship of Napoleon stunned the world and only the combined weight of all the allies backed with British gold, having learn the new style of war, made it inevitable through hugely larger armies that in the Waterloo campaign of 1815 the dream of empire ended.
Great Britain the most commercially powerful nation in the world in the time of Napoleon stood continually and at times alone against the might of the French war machine. While using money and naval battle and blockade to secure her allies and her island sovereignty Great Britain fought chiefly in the Peninsular giving the French a 'Spanish Ulcer' from which they suffered terribly. The Duke of Wellington turned Britain's only field army into the most effective, for its size, fighting force in Europe. For Great Britain the Napoleonic Wars brought a global supremacy that would last for nearly a century.
